Preview: Roxbury Film Festival and Interview with ACT Roxbury Executive Michelle Baxter

From July 28 - August 3, 2008, the Roxbury Film Festival celebrates its tenth year with features and short films celebrating local, national, and international filmakers and artists of color.

Actors Robert Townsend and Ruby Dee will make public appearances at the beginning and end of the festival.

Also there will be public discussions about issues impacting inner city residents and production workshops for youth participants.

This is not a subtle film. In writer and journalist James Carroll's and filmmaker Oren Jacoby's documentary based on Carroll's 2001 book of the same name people - who throughout history have professed to know the will of god - are malicious sons of bitches. From depictions of the crucifixion straight through to modern warfare and attempts to convert cadets at the Air Force Academy Carroll and Jacoby trace the influence of organized Christian religion on western civilization.

WALL-E Pulls Few Punches in Fine Environmental Family Flick

Having seen pretty much every film Pixar has ever produced, and finding their work to be uniformly excellent, I went to check out their latest release, WALL-E, with high expectations - and I'm pleased to say that they were met. Director Andrew Stanton (of Finding Nemo fame) and his team have brought what could easily have been just another sci-fi cartoon throwaway to life in what will probably shortly be considered an instant classic.

Emergenza Live Festival Highlights Up and Coming Bands

BOSTON/Allston – With over 50,000 bands booked for 8,000 shows on two continents in this year’s competition, the Emergenza European and North American Live Festival for Up and Coming Bands is now making an appearance in the Boston area. The 9 area bands that made it through the first two rounds competed in the semifinal round Tuesday night at the Paradise Rock Club.
