Cambridge, Mass. - Last Thursday, as Palestinian leadership pushed for recognition of an independent state at the United Nations, over 50 people attended a Harvard Square demonstration in support of that ongoing effort.

Opposition Party Protests MIT Appearance by Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez

Cambridge, MA - Members of the Boston Chapter of the Colombian left-wing opposition party Polo Democratico Alternativo (Alternative Democratic Pole) and allies held a Kendall Square protest against the appearance of former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez at the 2011 MIT Latin American Conference yesterday. The activists accused Uribe of violating human rights while in office - indicating that the number of displaced people doubled under his 2002-2010 tenure in office to 5.4 million, twice as many as Sudan in the same period.

Hundreds Rally in Boston for Egyptian Democracy

BOSTON/Copley Square - It was loud in Copley Square this afternoon as close to 300 people marched around Trinity Church, chanted slogans, and made speeches in solidarity with Egyptian citizens seeking to depose President Hosni Mubarak and form a more democratic and representative government there.

Egyptians in Boston Rally Support For Friends And Family

BOSTON/Copley Square - For the second time in a week, Egyptian nationals, Egyptian-Americans, and supporters living in greater Boston will gather Saturday, February 5th, to show solidarity with their friends and family protesting for democracy in the North African nation. Details were still being formulated at press time, but the location, Copley Square, and start time, 12 noon, was announced on a Facebook page earlier this week.

RCC Students Protest Police Brutality at BPD Headquarters

BOSTON/Roxbury - Over 50 Roxbury Community College students and community supporters held a protest against police brutality on Thursday in response to the beating of a 16 year old teenager by several Boston police officers on their campus on October 22nd. According to the police, the teen had escaped from a nearby junvenile detention facility and was resisting arrest. It is not yet known how the police knew the teen was on the RCC campus. The incident was captured on video by an RCC student and released on numerous social networks - resulting in immediate community outrage and national media attention.

Community members respond with outrage and organizing protests calling for reform and accountability. Press Pass TV was on the scene at one of the first protest rallies in response to the incident.

Documentary Film On Israeli and Palestinian Conflict Tours Campuses with Message Of Nonviolence

Newton, MA - “Little Town of Bethlehem,” a documentary featuring the stories of three peace activists - an Israeli and two Palestinians - had its North American premier earlier this week at Boston College in Newton.

Over the next month, the film is screening on university campuses across the U.S. The subjects of the film - a Muslim and Christian from the West Bank and an Israeli Jew – are participating in spirited discussions about the Middle East conflict.

Federal District Judge Rules Defense of Marriage Act Unconstitutional

BOSTON - A federal judge in Boston yesterday struck down a major section of the 14 year old federal Defense of Marriage Act, declaring it unconstitutional to deny financial benefits to same-sex married couples.

U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Tauro had two cases before him; both of which challenged section three of the 1996 measure. Referred to as DOMA, the bill mandates that only heterosexual married couples are eligible for federal health and other benefits.

Protest Targets Former Union Carbide and Current Dow Leadership, Calls for Justice for Bhopal Disaster Victims

Cambridge, MA - Outraged at the June 7 decision by an Indian local court to convict 7 former officials of Union Carbide of India Limited of criminal negligence in the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy rather than prosecute them on more serious charges for their roles in the deaths of thousands of residents of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, India, over 30 local advocates held a protest in Harvard Square on Thursday. The advocates also expressed anger that former Union Carbide Corp. CEO Warren Anderson remains free despite having a standing warrant out for his arrest in India to this day.

The demonstration was one of many that have been held around the world since the verdict.

Arroyo and Turner Show Support for Honduran Democracy Movement at City Hall Press Conference

BOSTON/Government Center - Two Honduran activists presented the findings of a recent report by the Honduran human rights organization Committee of Relatives of Detained and Disappeared in Honduras (COFADEH) to an audience of over 30 concerned area residents at City Hall last Wednesday. The report accuses the recently-elected Honduran President Porfirio Lobo Sosa of presiding over a dictatorship that is prosecuting grave human rights abuses on its own population. Lobo's election came after President Manuel Zelaya was forcibly ousted from the country by his own military last June in what has been widely recognized as a coup d'etat by the international community.
