BOSTON/Downtown Crossing – The luxury building developer Millennium Partners was slammed in a demonstration at Filene’s Basement in Downtown Boston on Monday for its claimed lack of adherence to local policy that sets hiring rates for city residents, people of color, and women. 

Around 200 members and supporters of the Boston Jobs Coalition picketed the condominium development before moving onto Millennium’s office on Tremont St., calling on them to meet the Boston Residents Jobs Policy (BRJP) rules, and to make required affordable housing payments to the city.

BOSTON/Downtown Crossing - US House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi hit the hub on Monday to mark the 20th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act at the West Street headquarters of the Service Employees International Union Local 615.

The former Speaker of the House, joined by Rep. Mike Capuano (D-Mass.), also took the opportunity to applaud local efforts to win paid sick time for workers, blast the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional and lay blame on the US Senate for striking down a key piece of President Obama’s landmark health care bill.

BOSTON/Downtown Crossing - “Burning carbon is the whole point of digging it out,” said Naomi Klein, during the advocacy group 350.org’s "Do the Math" tour stop at the Orpheum Theater in Boston on Thursday night. The five top global oil companies made a profit of 137 billion dollars in the past year, according to visuals on 350.org’s slideshow. Bold words on the screen continued by reading, “The fossil fuel industry cheats,” winning nods of approval from the audience.

BOSTON/Downtown Crossing - Over 200 people attended a protest picket outside the Hyatt Regency Boston hotel on Thurs. July 22nd to demand that the Hyatt Corporation reinstate the jobs of 98 former members of their housekeeping staff. The event was part of a nationwide day of protest by the UNITE HERE hotel workers union. Similar protests were held in several other cities.
