Date and Time: Tuesday November 1 2:00 pm-3:30 pm Congregate at UMass Boston plaza (100 Morrissey Blvd.) between the Campus Center and Wheatley at 2:00 pm March to Kennedy Library at 2:15 pm Demonstrate at the Inauguration of new UMass President Robert Caret from 2:30 to 3:30 Under the so-called "Strategic Plan " we at UMass Boston are moving rapidly to privatization of our university as the administration seeks to replace public appropriations with private funding; replaces classrooms that accommodate 35-40 students with classrooms for 100-500 students in the planned General Academic Building; replaces teaching by professors with the work of inexperienced and underpaid TAs; develops a "Research High University " with more Ph.D. programs and many fewer lecturers designed to attract affluent students many of whom will reside in newly constructed dorms; expands the student body from 15 000 to 25 000; and supports continually increasing tuition and fees which will result in an education that traditional UMB students will not be able to afford. Please join the new General Assembly of UMass Occupy Boston in a march and demonstration intended to serve notice on our new President as well as the administrators at UMB that we will not sit by idly while our public institution advances toward more and more complete privatization. Just us in demanding a roll-back in student tuition and fees (they have increased by 33% over the past three years) and a moratorium on the implementation of the Strategic Plan until the UMB community can conduct a genuinely democratic process of discussion and decision-making involving everyone affected on our campus.
