2010, MAY 15, BOSTON, MA: Hundreds of community organizers, families and activists gather to honor the lifetime achievements of Professor Howard Zinn on Saturday, May 15th from 2:00-4:00pm at the Old South Church at 645 Boylston Street, Boston, MA.
Professor Zinn was active in many local and national campaigns, including work in the civil rights, labor, anti-war, and education movements. His most famous publication, A People’s History of the United States, documents history as seen by America’s working class, including women, factory workers, Native Americans, African Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.
A People’s Celebration of Howard Zinn will celebrate Zinn’s radical work through presentations by local activists, student readings and music.
Speakers and performers will include:
former Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) leader and founder of The Algebra Project, Bob Moses; North Shore Labor Council president, Jeff Crosby; Lauren Cooper from the Zinn Education Project; Iraq Veteran Against the War and Veterans for Peace member, Michael Spinnato; Paula Elliott, jazz vocalist and anti-racism educator; and political folk ensemble Jake and the Infernal Machine.
The event is free and open to the public. A procession to Boston Common will follow the program.
Professor Zinn lived in Boston for nearly fifty years, and passed away January 27, 2010. He is survived by generations of community organizers inspired by his writings, speeches and actions.
