Open Media Boston

metro news from the ground up

Comments

An initial meeting that starts at 7:30 pm in a park when it is dark or nearly so excludes many women, older people and people with disabilities. The comments I saw on the discussions (that if you're not willing to sleep on the ground for days and nights without much preparation no matter what the weather, then you're not a revolutionary) were silly and arrogant. Many groups have been organizing in the Boston area for years or decades - are they being approached to participate, to lend what they (like you) have learned from other struggles? Or does their gender/age/race/ability make them invisible to these young people? Just askin'.

hi Sue, while I agree that they might have started the meeting an hour or two earlier

a) this is a first meeting ... the initial organizers have explicitly stated there will be no camping tonight ...

b) one might ask why those groups didn't start this themselves, but regardless there is actually a good amount of communication between more forward-thinking community groups and this emerging movement ...

c) the organizers aren't all young ... one of the handful of principals is in his 40s ...

also, there's one diversity point you're missing here ... the 2 most energetic organizers are working class people - plus half of the prime movers are women, and the most visible person describes herself as a queer woman ...

let's see how it goes ...

I just had to giggle:
"the organizers aren't all young ... one of the handful of principals is in his 40s ..."

Everything is relative.

Best,
Sue (64)
PS: I always assume that working class people are among the most energetic activists - we usually are! (Let's see who gets face-time on the media.)
PPS: I wish this initiative the greatest success and I'll be there one of these evenings.
